Our team at BBDO Guerrero has been working on this campaign for almost half a year now. It's a good feeling to now be able to talk about it. The Department of Tourism campaign must have been the most secret projects we've ever worked on. We couldn't even tell the other teams what we were doing.

Below is the campaign line and logo. Above it is the local initiative. Thank you to Andre Harabara for agreeing to let us use your typeface. Even though our accounts managers had to use Google Translate to chat with you.

We're still working on the rest of the campaign. Sometimes it feels we can rest now and let the Filipino social media do the rest of the wrok for us. Work must go on. Hope you all like the coming work as much as you liked the line and logo.

At Maison & Objet, one of Paris’ most important home shows that took place earlier this month, Kenneth Cobonpue unveiled some interesting new pieces, including an alluring seat cocooned in woven fabric (Rapunzel), a sleek lounge chair with a seemingly seductive tail (Mermaid) and a queen-like throne with majestic butterfly wings (Papillon). It was 10 years ago when we developed this script for Visa. The day before David left for Hong Kong to shoot the commercial 9/11 happened. He experienced the worst lines at the Manila and Hong Kong airports because security then didn't know how yet to react to the situation. Some how Zang Zi Yi still made it to the shoot. And they were able to finish the commercial.

Just came back from a birthday party. It was a late surprise party for my old mentor Dave Ferrer. It turned out to be a sort of mini reunion for some of us first and second generation BBDO guys. I failed to write a significant letter on my gift to Dave. So here's trying to make up for it.

Ferrer was my first mentor in BBDO. He was an ACD then when I arrived from the States. He used to call me California Boy because I still had then a somewhat thick San Francisco accent. It was my third month on the job and David Guerrero gave me "the talk". That I wasn't producing the kind of work similar to my school book. Meaning, I was lagging behind in the quality and quantity of work. I was just waiting to the brief from the accounts. So he asked me to step up. And he asked me to find a mentor in the office. There were three to choose from. Manny del Rosario (Art director then), Cynthia Bauzon (Also still an art director then.) and Dave Ferrer. David told me to stick with one of them and learn from them. So after I left his room the first person I saw was Dave hunched over his Mac. I went to him and told him what David told me. And that's how Dave became my mentor.

The Bay Fresh Phone Fresh ad above is the second ad Dave helped me produce. The first one was a poster for FedEx. But somehow I don't have a jpeg of that poster. Can't imagine how long I've been working on FedEx. He even went to the shoot with me to make sure I didn't screw up. It was also a good excuse for him to get out of the office. The photographer was all the way in Quezon City. That Bay Fresh ad soon got published in Jim Aitchison's book on marketing communications. It also won a couple of local awards.

As the mentorship continued, Dave eventually left to become ECD of JWT Manila. And my partner Tin Sanchez and I soon followed. The other photo above is of the three of us accepting the Kidlat Radio Ad of the Decade Award last 2010 in Boracay for the Lotus Spa account. The same campaign also got a couple of golds in Adfest and in Cannes.

So, thanks man(Dave). And good luck to your new apprentice. :)

2008 to 2011 so far

Tomorrow, August 1st, 2011, would mark my third year back in BBDO Guerrero. I had been away twice before. Ones back in 2003 when I spent some time teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and again from 2005 to 2008 where I had a two year stint at JWT Manila and 13 months in Lowe Vietnam as it’s Co-ECD.

Three years is a long time. It’s the second longest time I’ve stayed in an Agency. The first was my original tour of duty in BBDO Guerrero from 2000 to 2003. I guess it’s about time to look back. Dahil and sabi nila “Ang hindi marunong tumingin sa pinangalingan, nadadapa.”

Let’s start with the work. In 2008, my partner Tin Sanchez and I came back as BBDO Guerrero’s Head of Art and Copy. We worked on Pizza Hut, Modess, Imodium, Natasha Makeup, Bayan Telecommunications. Nothing much came out of that since we arrived in the last quarter of the year. I do remember having had the chance to work with Dan Matutina for a press and poster campaign for Bayan Wireless Landline. That was fun. I think it was a finalist in Tinta Awards November that year.

In November of ’08, I had the chance to work with Mun. One of the most creative people in the industry. He was the Creative Director for BBDO Malaysia’s Jeep campaign. It was the most awarded print ad of the year according to Gunn Report. I learned a lot by watching him work.

In 2009, we started working on the Lola Techie campaign for Bayan DSL. I remember the exact moment we thought of the idea for the first time. In fact, I have this strange habit of remembering where and how ideas were thought of. ’09 was when Dale, Jeck and Tim were working in the ‘Monsters’ campaign for HP. Lola Techie then led to happy clients since according to results the campaign worked for them. And it worked for us too. The Lola Techie campaign was awarded Gold and Grand Prix as well as several Silvers and Bronzes in award shows like, Digital Media Awards, Araw Awards, Kidlat Awards, Award Awards, AME, Spikes Asia, Boomerang, etc. It was also accepted in Campaign Brief Asia’s The Work. We recently released a new spot for Lola Techie a few months ago. This time with the help of Jao and Ian’s squad. I heard that one’s doing well for the client too.

In mid year of ’09 I had the chance to work with Paul Middleditch. When he shot our commercial for FedEx. The commercial since then had won viewers choice awards in Hong Kong and Singapore and Golds and Silvers in local shows here in The Philippines.

The company trip was in Saigon. Played a bit of tourist guide.

September 2009, Ondoy. Had the chance to work with Henry Freas and Paolo Villaluna to help Red Cross with tvcs asking for help for Ondoy’s victims. Araw Awards was moved from Bagiuo to Subic.

A couple of weeks were spent pitching for Dole Fruits.

The office Christmas Party was at M Cafe.

2010, still a bit fresh in my memory. We won Dole. Tin was assigned to work in Proximity London on the first quarter. Al and Algy, from BBH London spent some time with us here in The Philippines. Meggy de Guzman was my partner while Tin was away. We had the great pleasure of getting to work with Cherie Gil in a Lola Techie tvc about being able to watch drama shows anytime, any day.

Mid 2010, Dale, Simon, Pia, David and I went to Memphis to start working on the FedEx Changing World digital campaign. The site was a half year long project. Complete with late night and early morning conference calls with our counterparts in New York. All that hard work paid of when we received reports of happy clients and the campaign getting into Contagious Magazine, FWA, Communication Arts, One Show, D&AD, AWARD Awards, Cannes etc. Dale even went to Milan for the print shoot. With a side trip to Cannes Lions.

The company trip was in Hong Kong. It was also Simon’s despidia party at The Pawn in Wanchai.

Around this time I was promoted to Co-ECD of BBDO Guerrero along with Tin.

In Kidlat Awards that year in Boracay, BBDO was the most awarded agency. What made me happy was ALL our creatives had the chance to go up on stage.

I did a Noli Me Tangere campaign with David. Where we worked with Carlos Celdran. Photographing him around Binondo one morning holding up signs like SISA, MARIA CLARA over regular people.

Rey and Gary had just come up with the Persistent Headaches campaign for Saridon. Good stuff. It got Silvers and Bronzes in Clio, Cannes, Adfest, Luerzers, Kidlat etc.

Got to judge for the first Philippine Graphic Design Awards. Good fun.

Took a break in November. Visited my brother, Budjette in the UK. He was assigned at McCann Manchester for a couple of months.

The office Christmas party was at the surf pub on Jupiter St. If only I can remember the name right now.

Then there’s this year. 2011.

BBDO Guerrero was the most awarded agency in Kidlat Awards.

Got a chance to work with Dave Ferrer, Manny del Rosario and Raoul Panes as board members of the Creative Guild.

Got to judge for New York Festivals

Flew to Malaysia to work with Tim Bullock on a couple of commercials. Had a grand time for a week in Sydney for post. Well, it was mostly work. Really.

Well, that’s it for now. I might go back and re-edit this later on.

Just needed to write stuff before I started forgetting the last three years.

My father worked hard. I probably got my work habits from him. He always worked. All week. Even on Sundays. We’d go out for lunch and go around shopping then he’d take us to his office where he worked for a while, while my brother and I watched advanced episodes of G.I. Joe.

He had all the episodes of G.I. Joe and Transformers in his office because that was his job. He bought shows from around the world (mostly from the U.S.) and sold them in local channels here in The Philippines like RPN 9. Later on He even brought in David Letterman. And way before that, he brought in Sesame Street.

Thanks Dad, for all those shows you brought to our country. Even though you were working hard in your office, you were always there at home with us on TV.

This is first of what I hope is to be many illustrations comparing Metro Manila to different things. The illustration above shows Metro Manila with the Island of Singapore and Manhattan Island. The sizes are all proportional. It's amazing how Metro Manila and SIngapore are almost the same size. And surprising to find out how Manhattan can fit in Singapore. Look how Central Park when overlapped with Metro Manila it's length can run from Makati City to Pasig City.

If can become an obsession. A fixation. You forget to have haircuts.
Lightboxes wink and taunt you. You learn to grade your dreams. Your pockets
packed full of smudged Polaroids. And you start to redesign animals.

And only then might you win a D&AD Pencil.

If you don't, perhaps you haven't obsessed enough. Pushed it far enough.
Cropped enough, Hurt enough or watched enough.

Stared in the mirror enough. All alone enough. Late at night enough.

The D&AD Global Awards recognise work across the entire creatives spectrum
without exception.

Excellent work will get in the Annual. Work that rises above its peers will
be considered for a Silver Nomination, to win the iconic and much-envied
Yellow Pencil.

And groundbreaking creative, or creative that redefines its medium will
be considered for a Gold Award, otherwise known as the Black Pencil.

Lest year, 24,000 entires were submitted from 59 countries. 175 made
it into the prestigious D&AD Annual.

And from 127 Nominations, 64 Pencils were awarded. Of which four
were Black.

The closest thing, surely, to perfect work.

If you win, ask for a pay-rise. Up your day rate. Climb a mountain.
Take a sabbatical and write a book.

If you don't, go to sleep angry, Go to work hungry, and start obsessing about
the year ahead and everything in it.

And should true perfection ever turn up, we may even invent a Pencil for it.

It still makes sense today as it did five years ago. And it was already how I felt 11 years ago when I first started trying to get in to the book. A couple of nights ago, I found out that I have finally done it. And according to the copy above - The judges must have thought that the work my agency submitted was "excellent".

Our work for FedEx's website, experience.fedex.com was awarded to be published in this year's D&AD in the Digital Integrated Category. ASTIG! Congratulations to the rest of the BBDO Guerrero team - David, Simon, Pia, Dale, Tin, Rachel, Raquel, Karen, Ombet, Iking, Kim, Xerg, Al, Manny, Oliver and Idda. And thanks for the help from the Accounts at BBDO NY and the design team of Grow Interactive, OMD New York and UGL.

So, I will not be taking a sabbatical for it didn't win a Pencil. But I'll take advantage of this Holy Week to take a couple of days off. Then go to work hungry, and start obsessing about the year ahead and everything in it.

And also a big congratulations to all my friends at Saatchi Manila, Burnett Manila and DM9. They too got accepted in the book. What a good year for The Philippines indeed.

ASIA-PACIFIC - PHUKET, THAILAND, MARCH 19, 2011 – Expectations were running high before the 14th Asia Pacific Advertising Festival started. Manila is the fourth top submitting city with 224 entries to the festival after Tokyo (449), Mumbai (382) and Bangkok (356). The awards ceremonies over the past two evenings are sobering reminders that much needs to be done to get back to last year’s victorious Best of Show win by Ace Saatchi & Saatchi for its Vespa campaign.

While the top three submitting cities are also in the top five awarded cities, number four Manila received only seven metals—all Bronzes—and was thoroughly eclipsed by cities that were not even in the top five in submission such as Melbourne with 18 awards and Singapore with 17.

The only Filipino winners at Friday night’s awarding were the two ads by Leo Burnett Manila for Samurai energy drink, "Night Watchman" and "Cook", which won a Bronze each in Print Craft Lotus. "Cook" was also a finalist in Press Lotus.

Five other Bronzes were announced tonight. BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines’ Saridon campaign “Persistent headaches: Butcher/Carpenter/Laundry” for Saridon picked up Bronze in Poster Lotus. The “Carpenter” execution also won a Bronze single.

Also in Poster Lotus, Ace Saatchi & Saatchi’s “Candy Clown” for Tiger Biscuits picked up Bronze. The two other posters in the series, “Candy Minotaur’ and Candy Reptile, were named finalists, as was the campaign.

In Press Lotus, DM9 JaymeSyfu’s Pharex campaign “Center of Attention: Cinema/Opera/Lecture” received a Bronze, as did “Opera” single. The "Cinema" ad from the same campaign was a finalist in both Press and Poster.

Other finalists are TBWASantiago Mangada Puno's "Jellyfish" and "Snail" for Boysen Paints in Print Craft Lotus, BBDO Guerrero's "Euro Lane Box" for FedEx in Design Lotus, and Bates 141 Manila's "Vote for Kids" for Tulakabataan in Direct Lotus.

And some of us would recall watching these old movies in the afternoons which weren't great but they had that right feel and treatment at made the afternoon pleasant and calming. I miss those afternoons. I miss my dad. Happy birthday. Belated.

Last 2010 was a blast. It went by pretty quickly. Good thing.
Our "Lola Techie" campaign continued to win more international awards. Proof would be the collection of metal on Ombet's table.
Got to build my first fixed gear bike. Themed CMYK.
Went back to the States. For work. New York was a blast.
Judged at Kidlat Awards with Juggie and Guan. Had great drinks with the rest of the jury - Manny, Merlie,Leigh, Andrew, Lawin, Peter and the rest.
FedEx's Experience.fedex.com took off in October.
Lakihan Mo Logo Nights were fun to go to and so were Laking Aircon Nights.
Found Bruce under a Mistubishi Strada in front on my apartment.
Got to finally SUBA dive. (That one's for you dad.)
Visited Budjette in the UK.
Saw London for the first time. - Loved it.
Finally got a Bobafett 12 inch action figure.
Added the letter E on my business card.
Met Bob Greenberg.
Met Rai Inamoto.
Met Andrew Robertson.
Judged at the first ever Philippine Graphic Design Awards.
Finally got to work with Joe Dy again.
Last work of the year was a photo shoot with Carlos Celdran for the latest Noli Me Tangere campaign.

So for 2011. Here are some things to look forward too.
Judging at the New York Festivals.
Kidlat Awards. Where I'll be part of the organizing group. Not sure if it'll be more fun than being a judge.
Looking forward to another trip to the States. This time adding to New York, would be Boston and maybe a short trip back to San Francisco to get to meet Mash SF crew in person.
2011 is an Araw Awards year. Might possibly be done in Bagiuo. Since Ondoy made it impossible for the us to drive up last 2009. Good reason to wear a suit rather than a crummy v-neck shirt.
Looking forward to (or rather, working on looking good in a crummy v-neck shirt again.
Hoping to clear up some time to get to work with TIn on another cool campaign.
Can't wait to get my new fixed gear bike built. Calling it RGB this time.
Wishing to get to catch up with some old friends.
Them bay be being able to get some time to finally do the "30 days around the Philippines" tour I've always wanted to do.

Indonesian artist Arkiv Vilmansa has been painting, illustrating and designing cartoon-like figures since 2005. Shortly after finishing his Bachelor degree in Architecture, he plunged into the art world citing his love for drawing figures as his inspiration for this change of career path. Arkiv had a strong debut with his first vinyl figurine called Arkiv Instant. After Arkiv Instant, many exciting vinyl toys followed including a redesign of Mickey Mouse for Disney Asia.

"Out of Nothing" is a portal into Arkiv's parallel world. Harnessing creations from his lucid dreams. Eloquently using each stroke to make curves so vivid and fluid as it forms along the surface. Slowly embodying such playfully bold creatures that evoke a strange charm to them. Some having bunny ears, others having ears that resemble a mouse. Most vaguely reflecting creatures from our daily lives yet cleverly manages to escape such conformity. Possessing dynamic movements that makes you feel that they are going to break through the very canvass in which they were formed.

The Out of Nothing exhibits runs from December 11 (opening night) at Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery at The Collective 7274 Malugay St Makati. December 9 sketch night at 7pm (Arkiv to doodle on your sketchbooks) and December 10 Arkiv to do live art at B side.
